Resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial compounds permanently increases. There are several possibilities of protection against pathogenic microorganisms, for instance preparation of new vaccines against resistant bacterial strains, uses of specific bacteriophages and search for new antibiotics. The search for new antibiotics includes studies of new compounds from nontraditional sources, investigation of antibiotic specifying genes in natural environment and their cloning and uses, research of new antibiotic targets in pathogenic microorganisms and biosynthesis of hybrid antibiotics by using combinations of specific genes from different antibiotic clusters based on combinatorial biosynthesis.
