The concept of spontaneous formation of lipid rafts in the plasma membrane of animal cells was established 20 years ago. Despite of intense effort the rafts were never directly observed. The concept started to be very complicated in order to explain various experimental results, that were infirming it. The formation of lipid envelopes around membrane proteins rather than spontaneous segregation of lipids has been suggested recently. The lipid envelope theory is in conformity with the experimental observations and may offer new experimental consequences.
