The common cuckoo is a bird well‑known to every layman. Still, a great majority of traditional “knowledge” about the cuckoo was based on superstition, incomplete observations and erroneous interpretations. Here, I review various false “truths” about the cuckoo, explain how particular fallacies originated, and also put traditional views into a historical perspective.
